Analog Documentary Photography 
 

Abastan Community, Armenia, Summer 2023

Over several weeks in August 2023, I taught a course in analog photography at Abastan Community in Armenia.  This intensive course aimed to give the participants an oppotunity to explore documentary practices in photography from different perspectives. We began with an introduction to the history of photography, followed by theoretical and practical sessions exploring the fundamentals of analog techniques. Students explored key concepts rooted in chemistry and physics, such as light and colour, camera optics, shooting methods and various film development processes, while also developing their creative projects through writing and discussion. Practical sessions included both colour and black and white darkroom printing. A central part of the course was a collaborative group project, shaped by collective discussion and negotiation around a chosen theme. The course concluded with a group exhibition, with the time, place and format of the presentation determined by the participants.
